Abundant But Abandoned Mineral Resources in Katsina – By M. S. Ingawa

Few days ago, i came across a story published by the Katsina online paper, Katsina Post on the discovery of abundant deposits of Silica (SiO2) in the state by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure which was made known during their courtesy visit to the state.

I was prompted to pen down, for the benefit of my fellow Katsina people, the greatness of the news and create awareness on other abundant mineral resources God blessed Katsina with.

The Solid Mineral discovered, Silica, comes in Crystal form and mostly associated with Quartz which serves as raw material in Solar Panels, Glass wares, Tiles and other related products. The State government has signed an agreement with with Fed Government through the Agency for the establishment of Engineering Materials and Equipments Development Agency in the state.

Apart of the Silica, there are many abundant Non-Explosive, Non-Metallic solid minerals some which are as follows;

Kaolin: Is a solid mineral used as raw material in multiple products for different manufacturing companies such as Ceramics, Paper, Tooth paste, Cosmetics Plastics, Pharmaceuticals, Glass, Disinfectants etc. it’s deposits are abundantly found in Kankara, Bakori, Dutsinma and Rimi LG’s of Katsina State.

Graphite: Is a mineral used as raw material in Companies producing Lead Pencils and Foundry and deposits found in Northwest of Malumfashi and part of Kankara.

Granite: Mineral used for Construction and production of Decorating stones with deposits found in all the 34 LG’s in the state except Zango and Daura LG’s.

Feldspar: Mineral used For Ceramics and Glass production and deposits found in Kankia and Kafur LGA’s.

Nickel, Copper, Cobalt, Platinum and Vanadium: Minerals mostly used in Steel processing companies and deposits found in Jibia, Faskari and Funtua LGA’s.

Diamond: Mineral used as Gemstone drill bits and other high pressure demanding tools and deposits found in Kafur LGA.

Marl Clay: Mineral used as a binder in the production of Fertilizer and deposits found in all LG’s especially places with water absorbing soils and clays.

Iron-Ore: used in steel processing companies and deposits found in Kankia Ingawa LGA’s.

Above are just major ones but KATSINA is abundant with over 30 Solid Minerals in commercial quantities and the data was obtained from Katsina Investment and Property Development Company Limited.

Sometime back, the then Commissioner for Resources and Development, Engr Mustapha Muhammad Kanti Bello, disclosed the commitment of the state government to establish a state owned mining company for the exploration of the solid minerals. A wise move by the State Government that will help boost the economic activities, create employment, add value to the State’s IGR.

I was privileged to serve as an Industrial Training (IT) Student in the Industrial Minerals Limited Katsina-IMLK, a solid minerals processing company that’s in to pulverization of Non Metallic and Non Explosive minerals and sell as raw materials to other companies.

Katsina has notable investment potentials ranging from Agricultural, Mining, Energy and even Tourism. It only takes creativity of local business men and conducive business environment by the governments to make Katsina great.

I implore our youth to look around and exploit the advantages of this golden opportunity for self development and better Katsina and Nigeria. And to our politicians and business men, who please use the position and gift of Allah you have at the moment to the advantage of Katsina State Development and Nigeria at large as it will serve as a legacy you will leave behind to be remembered with.
