NBA Call on Taraba to domesticate CJA

The Nigerian Bar Association have call Taraba State  to domesticate the administration of criminal justice law  to engender more result in having a better criminal justice system in the state.

The President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Paul Usoro SAN,  made this known at  a one day legislative advocacy & sensitization workshop on  Promoting the Domestication and Implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Legislation in States of the Nigerian Federation held in Jalingo

Represented by Akorede Habib Lawal the National Assistant Publicity Secretary,Mr Usoro  commended  the interface  between the Bar and            the Bench which was evident in the number of High Court Judges including  led by the Chief Judge of Taraba State and other judicial officials to the workshop .He disclosed that   the workshop served as a stimulus to the Taraba State Government in particular to see the need why the overnment must encourage and push for implementation of the law in the State.

The workshop brought to limelight the gains made by the states that implemented the law and also brought to fore the advantages that Taraba State would benefit upon the adoption of the Administration of Criminal Justice law particularly the innovations that the legislation has introduced in our Criminal Justice System in the Nigeria.

In his brief remark,coordinator of the NBA-MacArthur project, Victor Abasiakan Ekim Esq., stated that one of the cardinal roles of the NBA is       the promotion of public interest advocacy. On the NBA Administration of Criminal Justice Project Overview, the           Project Coordinator highlighted the limit placed on the uniform application     of ACJA, 2015 in all states of the Federation by the provisions of the 1999     constitution which empowers States Houses of Assembly to make their own laws which made the NBA to approached MacArthur Foundation for support which was graciously granted. 

Speaking on the need for Taraba State to adopt the Administration of Criminal Justice Law, the Projected Coordinator stated that, Taraba State  would need a procedural law that could cope with modern realities which ACJA represents, such as the abridgement of time for criminal trials to an average of 22 months.

On the Approach and Activities in Taraba State, the Project Coordinator stated that, the NBA shall provide capacity development and continue legal education for legal and criminal practitioners and the general public using e-learning Platform and the training of State-level ACJ Trainers. 

In conclusion, the Project Coordinator called on participants and stakeholders to push for the implementation of the outcome of the workshop without delay.

On his part, HON. Justice Filibus Andetur, the Chief Judge of Taraba   State appreciated the NBA MacArthur project for the workshop. The Chief   Judge said that lawyers can practice in any part of the Nigeria with ease           due to the uniformity that ACJA has brought to bear in administration of criminal justice system in Nigeria. He concluded that the workshop was timely as Nigeria is fast becoming a unitary system in administration of criminal justice hence the workshop is of immense benefit to Taraba State.
